Despite denials from manager Larry Rudolph that Britney Spears will be “performing” at the Video Music Awards this weekend, whispers are that she is still making an appearance as a presenter in the highly anticipated awards show.

We’re told that everyone from the production crew to wardrobe are preparing for the pop princess to make a comeback, although nobody from MTV would officially confirm.

What’s interesting is that an inside source said Britney has her own dressing room. Either the gal is getting super-special treatment or she will do a little more than simply hand out an award.

The pop princess has also RSVP’d for 944 Magazine’s MTV VMA pre-party to be held at Hollywood hotspot Kress on Wednesday. So if Miss Spears does show that will mark her first officially scheduled party appearance since she launched Las Vegas club LAX exactly one year ago.

Tarts has also been told that Christina Aguilera will be showing off her four-octave range at the VMAs and there is the possibility of a performance by the Queen of Pop, Madonna. So will this year’s MTV showdown be deja vu? In 2003, Aguilera, Spears and Madonna made headlines with a three-way routine that included a steamy girl-on-girl kiss.

She will sing a track from her new album at the MTV Video Music Awards in Hollywood on September 7 in her first public performance since her disastrous appearance at the 2007 ceremony.

Then, in front of scores of celebrity guests and millions of viewers, Britney forgot her dance routines and could not mime in time to her single Gimme More.

Her abysmal effort came as she was staging scenes in bars, nightclubs and hotels. Later she was twice admitted to hospital psychiatric wards.

Now, desperate to rebuild her career and recover fully from that nightmare period, 26-year-old Britney intends to bounce back at the scene of her humiliation.

Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music Group, said: “Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?

“I’m not sure how we top Britney opening the show but we are working on it every minute of every day.”

Britney is already appearing in commercials previewing next month’s event at Paramount studios alongside Russell Brand, who will host the show.

A friend said last night: “She is as nervous as hell but at the same time itching to get back in front of the same audience where she screwed up so badly last time.

“It is the perfect platform for her to announce to her fans and the world that the dark days are behind her and she’s back on track with her life and her career.

“She really wants to do this, despite the jitters.”

Britney’s father James will legally remain in charge of her finances and business affairs until December.

Last week he told the American edition of OK! magazine that he hopes to be able to hand back the reins of her life to her by the end of the year.

Asked of his relationship with Britney, he said: “It’s wonderful. But like all daughters she is very manipulative and cunning, so she gets what she wants a lot.”

In the same magazine issue, a relaxed and happy-looking Britney, who posed for pictures with her sons Sean Preston, two, and year-old Jayden James, revealed that she is writing and recording a new album, due out in nine months, which she believes will be her “best work ever”.

She will also return to her role as air-head receptionist Abby in US?TV sitcom How I Met Your Mother, where producers say her performances are “mature and very professional”.

A possible movie part is also being discussed, said a source close to the Spears family, who added of the MTV awards show: “This is her big chance to make amends and let everyone see that she is becoming the Britney of old again.”

Britney Spears’ filmed scenes for Madonna’s Sticky and Sweet tour could be cut out, it has emerged.

The ‘Like a Virgin’ singer and Spears recorded the scenes to be broadcast on huge screens.

But Madonna — known to friends as Em — “hates” the video and is thinking about getting rid of it altogether.

A source close to Madonna says, “Britney looks amazing in the video but Em watched it and told them to take it out because she hated it.

“It was a scene where Britney was pretending to rip her own hair out.”

It was claimed earlier this week that Madonna is in “meltdown” mode and has been ordered to cut back her work schedule.

A source said, “Madonna is doing less than OK. She has been rehearsing for the tour and she is totally miserable.

“She’s down physically and mentally. The situation with Guy is very, very tense. The way the press are going crazy with the A-Rod story, her brother’s book and her physical exhaustion are all taking their toll.

“Family tension with her father and two of her other siblings has also been awkward.

“She feels nobody has taken her side. One of her closest pals says she has never seen Madonna so low. She has been feeling low and looking really gaunt.

“Madonna was told to go soft on work and rehearsals, so she will now take one proper day off every week and go easy in the mornings.

“She has a blood analysis done every few days — including one during last Friday’s rehearsal in front of everyone.”

Spears, meanwhile, has been nominated for a VMA for her Piece of Me video.

I don’t really believe this, they’re probably just saying it after she was cut out the Pussycat Dolls’ video back in June.

According to X17 Online, Britney was at Ben Kitay Productions in Hollywood from 9PM until 10:30PM auditioning dancers for a new project.

Forget Alex Rodriguez, Madonna wants a different man. And woman! According to The Sun, the site that broke the exclusive of the Britney-Madonna cameo first, Madonna has ulterior motives as to why she wants Britney to cameo and possibly appear at a few shows for her “Sticky & Sweet” world tour – to reunite with Justin! Duh!

“[Madonna] is desperate to get JT on stage too,” says a source. “Justin was heavily involved in the recording of Madge album Hard Candy and she wants him to perform one of their duets from the CD. Madge’s dream is to shock the world with JT and Britney – whose four-year relationship ended in 2002 – appearing on the same stage at her final US date in Miami in November.”

A source revealed: “Madonna is always trying to raise the bar and Britney and Timberlake on the same stage would be perfect. They have both been asked but I think both are a bit reluctant. Britney would find it all a bit emotional and JT might not fancy it. More likely is that they both appear on different dates.
