An upbeat Britney Spears appeared in court Friday with her father for a closed-door hearing in her ongoing conservatorship case.

The singer, 28, wore a gray jacket and black skirt with her hair dark brown and long with a few blonde streaks. She entered the courtroom at 1:45 p.m. from the judge’s hallway door following her father, Jamie.

Spears smiled as she stood at the attorney table next to her court-appointed lawyer Samuel Ingham. After Superior Court Commissioner Reva Goetz took the stand, Spears’s conservator lawyers requested to seal the courtroom because the hearing involved personal medical information.

The judge granted the request and ordered reporters and other audience members to leave.

It’s been nearly two years since the pop star’s father gained legal control over her affairs following her mental breakdown, and experts say it’s normal procedure for the judge to want to check in with her.

Experts add that Spears won’t regain control of her own life until she proves to the court – backed by doctors’ opinions – that she’s able to manage her own affairs.

Britney Spears will remain under the watchful eye of her father — now that a judge has ruled to extend her conservatorship. The judge didn’t specify how long the conservatorship will remain in place, but lawyers involved in the matter tell TMZ they expect it to last somewhere between six months and a year. Under the ruling, Britney’s dad, Jamie Spears, will continue to receive a $16,000-a-month payment for his duties. Andrew Wallet — the co-conservator — was also granted a $174,569.10 payment for services rendered between July 2009 and November 2009. The judge also authorized Britney’s conservatorship to kick out close to $300,000 in attorney’s fees. The next hearing is set for January 14th.

Not sure how I feel about this. Obviously her doctors are more in the know than fans, but it seems ridiculous that it may last another year, making it three years in total.

Britney Spears celebrated her 28th birthday on Wednesday surrounded by the men in her life – boyfriend Jason Trawick and sons Preston and Jayden.

The singer and her agent beau Trawick, 37, started the celebration a day early Tuesday night at L.A.’s Mondrian hotel, where Spears also enjoyed spa services, a source tells PEOPLE.

That night, the couple went to the Sunset strip, visiting both the Saddleback Ranch restaurant and Chateau Marmont. The next day, they shopped at West Hollywood’s Fred Segal boutique before reuniting with the pop star’s sons Preston, 3, and Jayden, 2, at her home in Calabasas.

“Britney looked so happy,” says an eyewitness. “She seemed very excited to spend her morning with Jason.”

Spears was also thrilled to get to be with her two boys on her B-day, says another source. “Britney is very happy to spend the day with Preston and Jayden. The kids know it’s her birthday … [They] are very excited about Britney’s cake too.”

While Spears hung with her sons at home, ex-husband Kevin Federline celebrated his girlfriend Victoria Prince’s birthday – which happens to fall on the same day as Spears’s.

Federline, 31, and Prince, 27, had a late lunch at a Mexican restaurant. “She looked very pretty when she arrived for her bash,” says an observer.

Federline, who sources says has lost about 30 lbs. since joining the cast of VH1’s upcoming Celebrity Fit Club, “joked how it’s about time he gets some proper food,” according to an eyewitness.

Today is Britney’s 28th birthday!

It’s shocking to think that just two years ago she celebrated her birthday with Sam and Ali. Since then she’s released a number one selling album, had two Billboard number one hit singles and had the biggest female solo tour of the year in the US. Let’s hope the good things continue to come for her!

Happy Birthday!

Not all the bad news out of Australia about Britney Spears is true.

Although she was in fact embroiled in a lip-syncing controversy, reports that her agent-boyfriend Jason Trawick abruptly left the country after rejecting her wedding proposal are “100 percent absolutely false,” says a source close to the couple. “There was no proposal and they were never engaged.”

The couple of more than six months had spent time together across Australia with her two boys, Preston and Jayden, while Spears performed on stops of her Circus tour. When Trawick headed back to L.A. instead of spending the holidays it was simply a matter of logistics. “Jason spent more time in Australia than originally planned,” says the source. “They are very happy.”

What was the craziest thing to happen to Britney Spears last week?

She went to Target. Twice. She bought a CD. That was it. Sounds pretty boring for an international pop icon, but it’s a great relief to those working to keep Britney Inc. in business.

For much of 2007 and 2008, Spears was an unhinged superstar unraveling daily in front of a captivated global audience and voracious media scrum. There were hours of aimless driving, underwear-free outings with Paris Hilton, a bizarre romance with a paparazzo, an involuntary psychiatric hold. But after more than a year of belching putrid black smoke, the Britney machine is humming along quite nicely, thank you, and these days it’s about the music, not the antics. Did she really shave her head or was that just a bad dream?

“For me, the silence is golden,” a Spears insider tells TIME. Her latest single, “3,” hit airwaves on Sept. 29 to tremendous buzz (Rolling Stone called it a “surefire dance-floor stomper”), and will be part of her upcoming box set The Singles Collection, due out Nov. 24, which commemorates her 10 years in the record industry. Other milestones have passed quietly. The pop star just completed the European and U.S. legs of a grueling concert tour with a performance in Las Vegas, the same spot where two years ago she crashed and burned at the MTV Video Music Awards. After a brief rest, she will tour Australia in November.

So the only Spears circus that folks are seeing these days is onstage at sold-out auditoriums. “The good news is, she’s been able to re-create herself and finish the U.S. tour,” says the insider. “While people in Hollywood love seeing a downfall, they are all about seeing people pull themselves together. And it seems, for now, Britney’s doing it.”

Her rebirth is no surprise to Joseph Kahn, who directed Spears in her greatest video triumphs over the years (including “Toxic” and “Stronger”). He knew there had been projects that just plain fell through during what he calls “the blackout period,” but still, Kahn jumped at the chance to direct the singer in her comeback video “Womanizer” in late 2008.

“It was a big question for me to find out if she could actually accomplish this,” Kahn tells TIME. “I didn’t know which Britney was going to show up because of how crazy the previous year had been.” His worries were quickly erased. “There she was on set, watching the choreographer, bobbing her head to the music. Baby steps. She was getting her head back into it.” He says Spears was noticeably “quieter” on set and worked on a tightly structured schedule. “This wasn’t your typical 30-hour video workday,” says Kahn. “They gave me eight hours a day for two days. She was getting her legs back.”

The force behind the structure: Britney’s controversial father Jamie Spears, who has served as her court-appointed conservator since her emotional breakdown in early 2008, assuming near total control over her business and personal life. His continuation of that role has been key for insuring her tour and maintaining the custody agreement with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. Proponents of this agreement believe it has helped Britney stay on track. “The reason for the miracle comeback, the reason she has not been in the news, is so due to Jamie,” says the source. “He had a bad rap in the past. I don’t know how much of the show he’s running, but he’s making sure she stays out of trouble. He was the only one capable of doing that in her life.”

The strong arm of the conservatorship is felt in everything from Spears’ curtailed spending to the weeding out of people who are considered bad influences. Even her downtime on the tour was carefully choreographed. When Spears’ tour bus pulled into Pittsburgh, Pa., in March, the manager of the local Mad Mex restaurant didn’t think twice about Spears’ advance team’s request: no flash photography, and her tables were not to be offered Red Bull or alcohol. Hard to argue with the results: a low-key meal devoid of drama. The most exciting thing the manager had to say was that Spears really liked the guac.

The conservatorship has its critics. Onetime Spears confidant Sam Lutfi, who is appealing a long-standing restraining order brought by Jamie Spears to keep him away from Britney, insists that he knows the pop star “is desperate to end the conservatorship.” His take on the current scenario: “She’s not entitled to her freedom yet able to make hundreds of millions of dollars for them by performing a world tour.” And former Britney BFF Alli Sims believes the Spears machine doesn’t stop the drama from happening but is simply more effective in squelching the tabloid stories. “She has so many people controlling her every move, so who knows what’s real and what’s not?” Sims tells TIME in an e-mail. “The people around her are keeping the stories out. I hope and pray she is at a good place.”

The Spears insider says the pop star can “resent” the controls and that it gets worse when she’s not touring, like now. “If you are on summer vacation, you are going to resent your parents,” says the source, who hopes that we’ve seen “the end of the bad parts of this amazing story.”

But if another bad part does unfold, it’s a safe bet the pent-up media will not leave Spears alone. “There are countless journalists bemoaning the fact that Britney is so well behaved these days,” says Steve Dennis, author of the new biography Britney Spears: Inside the Dream. That said, he adds, if she can hold it together, Spears will have achieved her greatest success. “If this redemption has some longevity to it, then it will be one of show business’s all- time comebacks,” Dennis says. “She was staring into the abyss. But right now she’s showing the world” — to paraphrase her hit song “Gimme More” — “Britney’s back, bitch.”

According to the New York Daily News and Perez Hilton, a greedy Britney Spears was too busy grabbing swag for herself at the Teen Choice Awards and left her two young rude sons unattended.

One of them was reported to have cussed while in the suite.

“We were all surprised by their potty mouths, but it was actually pretty funny,” one onlooker reportedly said.

But the person who was escorting Britney and her sons Jayden James and Sean Preston says that’s all nonsense.

“She never stopped at one sponsor station,” the escort tells the Dish Rag. “It was all about the kids. She was devoted to them and was with them the whole time. They were even having a great time with Band Hero and they were all playing with Hasbro’s new Bop-It.”

“She never left the boys’ side,” our source says. “She could not have been sweeter, and portraying her as an inattentive mother is not true and so not fair.”

Our source says she never heard either boy swear. And they didn’t steal the drumsticks — as reported by the Gatecrasher in the Daily News — from Band Hero either.

“They were playing with the sticks. They’re just kids and they loved them. So we let them take those and got real drumsticks from the stage so that others could play with them too. They didn’t steal anything.”

So don’t believe every bad thing you read. Especially when it’s about Britney.

She’s had a rough time and has come a long way. Give the girl a break!

Britney Spears‘ daddy is ready to release his daughter into the wild again — we’ve learned the conservatorship may be coming to an end.

Sources tell us Jamie Spears will ask the court to review the terms of the conservatorship after her concert tour ends in November. Jamie can’t ask the judge to end it — just to review it. The judge then decides if Britney should regain control of her life.

We’re told Jamie thinks Britney is ready to roll on her own. He has made her life his full time job since February, 2008.

Fact is … if it weren’t for the tour, given Britney’s progress, the judge might already have made the decision to undo the conservatorship. The various vendors were promised under their contracts that the conservatorship would stay in tact throughout the tour.

A little editorial comment … it may be the most remarkable turnaround we’ve ever seen. A year and a half ago, people were worried for Britney’s life.

After making a big splash in the Bahamas the day before, Britney Spears emerged Saturday in Amite, La., where she made a low-key appearance as an “honorary” bridesmaid at the wedding of her cousin, Laura Lynne Covington.

“When her brother walked her down the aisle, she looked stunningly calm and beautiful,” says one wedding guest. “She was very pretty, low-key. She was not the center of everything, just pretty and calm and collected.”

The wedding took place at the First United Methodist Church, the same church where the funeral for Covington’s mother Sandra, who died of ovarian cancer, took place in January 2007.

Later, at the wedding reception, the pop star hung out with her sister and fellow bridesmaid, Jamie Lynn, who toted baby Maddie, and “sat at a table off to the side and visited with local people she knew,” says the guest.

“There was no fanfare,” noted the guest. “With all the star power Britney and her family command, it was still the bride’s day.”

Pop star Britney Spears flew into Miami today via private jet and landed in the hospital–but it’s not what you think.

Spears stopped by Miami Children’s Hospital for a surprise visit with sick kids and to donate $100,000 to the hospital’s Big Apple Circus Clown Care, a community outreach program that brings the joys of the circus to hospitalized children at 19 leading pediatric facilities across the United States.

Pediatric radiologist Ricardo Restrepo and Lee Schrager, Director of Media for Southern Wine and Spirits America, arranged for the singer to visit the hospital, saying the circus theme of her tour was a natural tie in for a hospital with clowns.

Spears was with her dad, Jamie, who has been keeping her on a literal tight rope since the pop tart kicked off her Circus tour in New Orleans last week. Although papa Spears tried to prevent us from snapping any shots, we managed to snag one of Brit, who looked surprisingly fresh, dewy and poised, if not a little robotic.

The singer posed for photos with kids, barely spoke beyond “Say cheese,” and was in and out in literally ten minutes. But that’s OK– she’s busy. Tonight, Brit brings her Circus show to the American Airlines Arena in Miami.

Sources tell RadarOnline.com that Britney’s mom Lynne and baby sister Jamie Lynn flew a separate jet into Miami to join her tonight. Those hoping Brit will go batty in Miami tonight should look elsewhere for train wreck material —(such as the Seminole Hard Rock where Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson are trashing a party)—-as it is clear her dad has her under serious surveillance.

Last March, while Britney Spears was just beginning to live under the control of her father’s court-ordered conservatorship, she made headlines yet again when she met with fellow scandal magnet a private chat over dinner in L.A..

And then in May 2008, Britney joined Mel and his family on vacation in Costa Rica.

On Sunday night’s special post-Oscar edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live, Mel opened up about what moved him to reach out to the troubled pop star.

“She’s a nice kid, ya know. She was just going through a rough patch,” he explained. “You see kids that you know in the industry… I just felt like this poor kid she’s lining up to be stoned. I just thought, ‘I wonder if anyone is reaching out to her,’ so I just called her and she’s doing great now.”

But Mel was not willing to take any of the credit for Britney’s remarkable turnaround in the months since.

“It’s got nothing to do with me,” he said. “She pulled herself out of this, and her dad… he’s the real hero.”

Meanwhile, Mel still harbors regrets that he didn’t reach out to fellow Aussie actor, the late Heath Ledger.

“I shoulda called him years before,” he confessed to Jimmy. “I didn’t really know the ins and outs of what was up with him, but I don’t believe it was just an accident. Maybe I coulda called him… When you see sort of an impending tragedy or something that might go wrong, it just felt like I should do something about it.”
