Not all the bad news out of Australia about Britney Spears is true.

Although she was in fact embroiled in a lip-syncing controversy, reports that her agent-boyfriend Jason Trawick abruptly left the country after rejecting her wedding proposal are “100 percent absolutely false,” says a source close to the couple. “There was no proposal and they were never engaged.”

The couple of more than six months had spent time together across Australia with her two boys, Preston and Jayden, while Spears performed on stops of her Circus tour. When Trawick headed back to L.A. instead of spending the holidays it was simply a matter of logistics. “Jason spent more time in Australia than originally planned,” says the source. “They are very happy.”

circ

After 9 months and 97 shows, The Circus Starring: Britney Spears finally came to an end today.  The picture above of Britney and her dancers was taken in Melbourne on Friday, a couple of hours before her penultimate show.

I’ll soon be on the hunt for the best tour pictures to use as backgrounds for the site.  If you have any suggestions (they have to be high quality) feel free to post them in the comments section!

UK Chart Update

In the official singles chart, “3″ falls 4 places to number 14 in its third week on the chart.

The newly released Singles Collection enters the official albums chart at number 38.

I’m hardly surprised at the collection’s low placing – hopefully next time Jive realise they can’t just throw something out with no new material (apart from one new song which most people already have) and expect people to buy it.

Just wanted to quickly update to remind you all that there are only two Australian dates left of Britney´s Circus tour, after which the show will come to end.

Sunday´s show in Adelaide will be her 97th show of the tour, which started in March this year.  She has since been to Europe and done two legs in North America.

It´s amazing that Britney has come this far, especially considering a few months ago people thought she wouldn´t even make it through the first few shows!

… And comes in at number 5!

5. Blackout – Britney Spears (SonyBMG, 2007)

The title was pertinent enough — Spears had shaved her head and was in and out of rehab when this vocally scrunched, harshly metallic album appeared. No one expected it to be this good.

Check out the full list here.

It might seem rather odd that this new collection features fewer tracks than 2004’s greatest hits collection, My Prerogative. But though trimmer, this set represents the best disc yet from arguably the biggest pop artist of the past decade, packing more hits (and bigger sales figures) into the equation than any other festive-period best-of. Put simply, this is the definitive Britney album.

Because, after all, who needs one of her ‘proper’ albums – sets featuring the singer’s three or four hits of the campaign in question padded out with a smorgasbord of filler material. They’re out there because the industry model demanded it, though with release strategies and marketing budgets evolving and fluctuating respectively, it’d be no surprise if artists of Spears’ ilk ultimately stopped producing long-players altogether. If Ash can do it, then…

While her career hit the skids in the middle of the decade – no need to elaborate on that here – Britney’s comeback with 2007’s Gimme More and Piece of Me, and the following year’s Womanizer, was phenomenal. With the singer assumed lost to a life of perennial befuddlement, expectations for her post-wilderness material were low. So when Gimme More proved to be every bit as repeat-play friendly as peak-period hits I’m a Slave 4 U, Boys and the Grammy winning Toxic, all predictions for what might follow went out the window.

Seven of these 18 tracks are from Spears’ 2007-‘til-now phase, and the excitable energy of If U Seek Amy, Circus, Radar and recent stateside chart-topper 3 comes filtered through admirable nods to electro artists and production houses of utmost respect. While her songs might have matured lyrically, often lacking the comparative innocence of her breakthrough hits and swapping innuendo for outright smuttiness, compositionally they’re astonishingly fresh. Even Girls Aloud were too squeaky clean to do justice to Womanizer when they covered it, such is Spears’ unashamed directness (though Sugababes could probably pull it off these days).

Spears’ revival in the last two years is evidence that even the most easily pigeonholed artist can eschew expectation. After all, when you’re seen as having nothing left to lose, anything with a little bite is going to leave an impression. And these songs don’t just make a mark, lingering in the memory – they are essential pieces of the past ten years of pop history, and deserve better than dismissal by so-called discerning listeners.

Producer Nate ‘Danjahandz’ Hills, AKA Danja, has confirmed today on his official Twitter page that he will be working with Britney on new material “very very soon.”

He has previously worked with her on songs like “Gimme More”, “Get Naked (I Got A Plan)”, and “Break The Ice.”

With regards to the next studio album, so far we know she’s working with Sean Garrett (“Toy Soldier”), Fernando Garibay (“Amnesia”, “Quicksand”), possibly Max Martin and now Danja.  According to a message published on SonyBMG’s internal label website a few months ago, the tentative release date is Spring 2010.  However, I would say a fourth quarter release is much more likely.
