Clever BRITNEY SPEARS has found a way to win back favour after being snapped driving through Malibu, California with her baby son on her lap – by hoping her blunder will make other mums think hard about child safety.
The pop superstar has already come clean about the dangerous gaffe, which had family groups enraged – and almost cost her a hefty fine.
In an interview last week (ends10FEB06), she called the incident “a mistake,” explaining she was trying to dash away from paparazzi without restraining her son SEAN PRESTON.
Now, speaking exclusively to America’s People magazine, Spears urges other parents to take child safety more seriously.
She says, “I love my baby more than anything, and as unfortunate an experience as this has been for me and my family, if it brings more attention to child safety then I fully support that.”

Britney Spears is opening up for the first time since welcoming Baby Sean Preston into the world. The singer is on a high note as she talks to People magazine about re-discovering her voice, getting back in shape and the much-talked about “Baby Gate.”
People Magazine’s Jamie Bufalino relayed Brit’s revelations about starting this new chapter in her life.
Regarding the buzz and criticism surrounding the car seat scandal, Bufalino said, “It’s been a very unfortunate incident for her and her family.”
Doting mother Britney would never put her precious baby boy at risk; he’s her pride and joy, and she revealed that he’s the inspiration behind her desire to get back in the studio and record a new album. “She’s really re-discovered her talent for singing by singing to Sean Preston,” Bufalino revealed.
In addition to a new album, which Britney said to expect by the end of the year, Spears is excited to debut her hot new body! “She’s getting into pre-baby shape by doing a combination of cardio, yoga, Pilates and weight lifting.”
But as Britney gets her life back on track, it seems that her husband Kevin Federline is still reverting to his old ways.
According to entertainment website TMZ.com, K-Fed and his buddies were playing war games in the streets of Los Angeles on Monday. “They were all over a residential area shooting air guns with rubber pellets,” said Harvey Levin, managing editor of TMZ. “They were hitting cars, buildings; they are lucky that it didn’t put somebody’s eye out.”
Britney begins her comeback with a live appearance on “Good Morning America” on February 28, and a guest spot of “Will and Grace” on April 13.

Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta chided pop star Britney Spears as “irresponsible” for driving with her baby on her lap as he announced a new initiative Monday to improve child car-seat safety.
“Recent photos of Britney Spears driving with her infant son on her lap are troubling. And while Ms. Spears has acknowledged her mistake, her actions still send the wrong message to millions of her fans,” Mineta said at an event at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to mark the start of Child Passenger Safety Week.
Photos published earlier this month showed Spears driving her sport-utility vehicle in Malibu, Calif., with her 4-month-old son perched on her lap. The pop star acknowledged that she made a mistake but said she acted instinctively when frightened by paparazzi.
“No matter who you are, there’s absolutely no excuse for this display – not instinct, not fear, not even reckless paparazzi,” Mineta said. “It’s irresponsible to compromise the safety of a child for the sake of the moment.”
After a tour of the hospital’s emergency department, Mineta announced $25 million in new federal funding over the next four years to states that pass and enforce new or tougher booster- seat laws. Sixteen states do not currently have such measures on the books, he said.
“Each year, over 53,000 kids are needlessly injured in crashes,” he said. “If all of these children had been riding in a booster seat, it’s possible that thousands of them would have escaped their crashes virtually unharmed.”
Booster seats – designed for children too big for traditional toddler seats and too small for safety belts – raise a child up so the safety belt fits properly.
Mineta said children roughly from about age 4 to age 8, as long as they are under 4-feet-9, should be placed in booster seats.
Smaller children who are belted in without a booster seat run the risk of serious – and preventable – injuries by seat belts that are designed to fit adult frames, said Dr. Dennis Durbin, a pediatric emergency physician at CHOP. “Seat Belt Syndrome” can cause damage to a child’s abdominal organs, spleen and spine because the belt is strapped across the abdomen instead of low in the hips, he said.
“In 1999 … booster seats were used by only 5 percent of 4- to 8-year-olds. By the middle of last year, that figure stood at just over 30 percent,” Durbin said. “That is great news. But there remains much room for improvement.”

Britney Spears, a Louisiana native, will celebrate Mardi Gras in New Orleans later this month when the devastated city hopes to revive some its old partying ways.
“I am honored to be a part of the Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans this year,” Spears said in a statement Monday. “It is so important for this amazing city to continue its annual traditions and I am really looking forward to being involved.”
The 24-year-old pop star will appear on ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Feb. 28 (7 a.m EST), when the morning show reports live from New Orleans. ABC announced that Spears will bring “surprises for a group of very deserving young residents.”
The Mardi Gras parade season will run from Feb. 18-28; Fat Tuesday, or Mardi Gras Day, is Feb. 28.
Spears grew up in Kentwood, and has participated in fundraisers for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The singer also will guest star April 13 on NBC’s “Will & Grace.”
Last week, photos were published of Spears driving with her 4-month-old son, Sean Preston, sitting on her lap instead of being strapped to a car seat in the back seat. She first blamed pursuits by the paparazzi, but later said it was a “mistake.”
On Monday, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta chided Spears as “irresponsible” for driving with her baby son on her lap and announced a new initiative to improve child car seat safety.

Britney Spears’ husband Kevin Federline has laughed off reports his famous wife is pregnant with their second child.
The couple, who wed in September 2004, welcomed Sean Preston into the world last September. Federline has two children Kori and Kaleb from a previous relationship with actress Shar Jackson.
Earlier this month, reports claimed the Toxic singer had announced her second pregnancy at Malibu, California store Shabby Chic, declaring: “That’s right, number two,” while rubbing her rounded belly.
However, backstage at the Grammy Awards on Wednesday, Federline said, “It would be a few years (before I’m a father again).”
