The stars came out in droves for the 12th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards and the after party. The SAG Awards are a favorite of Hollywood’s acting community because since categories are voted on by peers rather than the sometimes stuffy Academy members or the mysterious Foreign Press. The SAGs are also considered good indicators for the Oscars, whose nominations will be announced tomorrow.
By 8pm, the awards had been handed out (see a rundown of the winners below) but the party was just getting started next door at the People Magazine-hosted post-show gala, where A-listers settled in and relaxed. George Clooney held court at the bar, while Nick Lachey conversed with Anna Farris, and the Desperate Housewives crew mingled throughout the beautifully-decorated tent. And despite the tremendous weight of the SAG trophy (almost 15 pounds!) winners like Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Oh and Felicity Huffman carried the prize around with pride, while Lost’s pint-sized Malcolm David Kelley struggled to hold on to his.
But the biggest buzz of the night came from the unexpected arrival of Britney Spears (with husband Kevin Federline and brother Bryan in tow) towards the party’s end. The eight-member posse lounged in a corner booth guarded by a wall of bodyguards while Britney and Kevin cutely nuzzled to themselves. Britney was feeling the music, all right, nodding her head along to songs by Prince, Gwen Stefani, and even her ex, Justin Timberlake. But it was the Pussycat Dolls’ “Don’t Cha” which got Britney off her seat and onto the dance floor (Kevin in hand), followed by her pal Madonna’s first hit, “Holiday.” Britney’s certainly got her groove back, but still made it an early night, leaving at 11:30. Awards season may be in full swing, but mommy duty beckons.
