Singer and actress Bette Midler has hit out at modern female pop singers, calling them “characterless”.
Midler, 59, criticised modern singers for lip-synching on stage.

“It’s a strange time, I don’t want to say it’s the dark ages for music but it’s not such a great time,” she told reporters in Australia.

She said: “It’s kind of hard to tell the characters apart.” Midler is in Australia for her first tour there for 26 years.

‘Im not retiring’

Midler’s latest show features her singing alongside a horn section. She said she would never lip-synch her way through performances, a charge she has levelled at younger singers.

“I just can’t do that… I guess because I came up singing and dancing at the same time, to me it’s not so frightening, for a lot of kids it is, for the younger ones it’s scary,” she said.

Asked is she was thinking about an end of her performing career, she said: “I’m not retiring, and you can’t make me.”

Midler also dismissed rumours she was set to appear opposite Britney Spears in a film called In the Pink.

“Oh, that’ll never happen,” she said, saying the film had not been put into development.

Midler, a cabaret and musical stalwart, has appeared in films such as Beaches and Ruthless People.

Is Britney Spears pregnant? Or just really, really hungry?

Her publicist says she’s not expecting, but Spears and her increasingly voluptuous figure are sparking a flurry of speculation.

Us Weekly and Star have reported that the pop princess is pregnant, citing unnamed sources.

The Us Weekly article, headlined “Baby on Board,” says Spears was recently seen at Starbucks gobbling a roast beef sandwich but avoiding coffee and cigarettes.

Life & Style says Spears, 23, is not pregnant, and it attributes her “bump” to mom’s home cooking. Brit’s also been sampling the chili and smoothies at her dad’s joint, JJ Chill, in Venice, Calif., People reports.

But People also enters the fray of pregnancy speculation by printing several photos showing Brit’s new curves under the headline “Britney’s Baby Buzz.”

Spears has made no secret about wanting a baby with husband Kevin Federline. But publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnick tells USA TODAY: “Britney told me she’s not pregnant.”

Of course, not all baby rumors turn out to be true. Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston have both been the subject of false pregnancy reports in the media.

Spears, meanwhile, posted a cryptic message on her Web site this month that might be a clue to some big Brit news on the horizon: “I feel as though I have been very quiet and still lately. ‘The calm before the storm’ — I can really relate to that statement.”

Hey, I couldn’t help but notice in the recent pictures of her on her brothers balcony she wasn’t wearing her wedding bands. Are her fingers beginning to swell?? I was pregnant not to long ago, and to me she is without a doubt pregnant. No ciggs in a few months, dyes her hair dark because you can’t bleach your hair when you are pregnant, and is now wearing loose clothing. Plus she was at the doctors for over 2 hours…sounds like an ultrasound to me!! I hope she is, she’ll be a great mom!!!

Britney Spears and her husband of seven months, Kevin Federline, are expecting a baby, Star can exclusively and definitively reveal!

The 23-year-old singer is three-months pregnant, according to sources close to the couple, and an official announcement confirming the happy news is expected to be released this weekend.

Sources say Britney has canceled all her future work engagements and is busy preparing for her new job – motherhood – when the baby arrives this fall.

Brit’s made no secret of her desire to start a family since her marriage to Kevin Federline on Sept. 18 last year. Less than a month after the wedding, Britney was telling fans on her Web site, britneyspears.com, how she longed for a baby, saying, “Being married is GREAT and I can’t wait to start my family!” Now it looks like her dream has finally come true.

A source close to the couple tells Star that Britney is already reading “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” an advice manual for expectant moms by pregnancy and childcare writer Heidi Murkoff, and is eating for two with double helpings of everything.

“Brit is totally focused on being a mom,” says the source. “She says it’s the most important thing she’s ever done in her life. From now until the baby comes, she says she’s not going to do anything more strenuous than eat for two!”

Father-to-be Kevin, 27, already has two children by his ex, Moesha star Shar Jackson – Kori, 2, and Kaleb, 8 months.

“He calls Brit ‘my lady-in-waiting,’” says the source. “Kevin knows he’s not going to get a moment’s peace from now until the baby comes. He says what he really enjoys about her pregnancy is chugging beers and telling Brit ‘You can’t have one!’”

Another source close to the couple says although the Britney and Kevin are keeping the pregnancy a secret, they’re not fooling their friends and family. “Kevin’s been acting funny,” says the source. “But he won’t explain why. Britney and Kevin have been planning how they would handle this if they found out she was pregnant – they’d keep it to themselves until she was at least three months along.”

The week before her momentous announcement was expected, Britney was taking it easy, relaxing in Santa Monica’s luxury beach hotel Le Merigot, where she’s staying with Kevin for two weeks while their $7-million Malibu home is renovated.

She enjoyed a massage and then hit the eucalyptus sauna and steam room. But it looks like she’s decided to get back in shape for her pregnancy too – splitting her daily workout between power-walking on the gym treadmill and yoga stretches. And after all that hard work, Brit ordered up some room service – fried calamari and shrimp cocktail, with extra roulade sauce. All that mayo is pretty fattening, Brit!

But then, we guess you’re eating for two now.

Pop princess Britney Spears reportedly made all attempts to make her hubby Kevin Federline’s 27th birthday special but he was in no mood for any celebrations.

The singer booked an ocean-view suite at Santa Monica’s posh Le Merigot Hotel & Spa, decorating it with 15 jumbo “Happy Birthday” balloons Britney arrived early in the afternoon and hit the spa for some running on the treadmill and yoga, however Kevin seemed disinterested and didn’t show up till late, and finally arrived with his younger brother Cameron and a couple of his friends.

After hanging out in Cameron’s hotel suite for about 30 minutes, Kevin finally walked over to Britney’s birthday suite, where the couple stayed for a couple of hours munching birthday cake and opening presents.

But getting cozy with Brit apparently did little to lift Kevin’s spirits. An eyewitness told Star Magazine that while an obviously unhappy Britney looked on, Kevin told a chambermaid in the hallway to dispose of the balloons and cake. (ANI)

The pop babe, who has made no secret of her desire to start a family with second husband Kevin Federline, will reportedly announce her pregnancy within the next couple of days.

Respected American gossip columnist Norm Clarke said: “Britney Spears. not a girl, soon to be a mommy.

She’s pregnant. Look for the announcement any day now.”

Sources claim the sexy singer has quit smoking after finding out she was expecting her first child.

Earlier this year, Britney sparked rumours she was expecting her first child after she bought a maternity swimming costume.

The sexy singer reportedly ordered the garment from exclusive Los Angeles boutique Babystyle and then asked staff if there were any shops nearby for expectant mothers.

Britney recently admitted she was desperate to have a baby since marrying Kevin – who has two children with ex-girlfriend Shar Jackson – last September, saying she wanted to be a young mother.

She said: “The only thing I haven’t done so far is experience the closest thing to God and that’s having a baby. I can’t wait!”
